The architectural design of FröbelHöfe was developed by the Dresden-based firm A3 Architekten. Founded in 1998, the studio has been involved in the development of the site on Fröbelstraße for many years and brings an in-depth knowledge of Dresden’s Friedrichstadt district to the project.
According to Thomas Hanselmann of A3 Architekten, he has been closely involved with Friedrichstadt and its development for around 15 years. Since 2016, the studio has been developing concepts for the site on Fröbelstraße, carrying out planning work and organising competitions. FröbelHöfe is being realised on the basis of this long-term planning work.
Hanselmann describes the project’s architecture as diverse and urban, combining contemporary design with historicising approaches. A shared design manual provides the project partners with a common basis for the further development and implementation of the ensemble.
FröbelHöfe consists of eight individually designed residential buildings. The buildings vary in width and number of storeys. Their arrangement draws inspiration from the smaller-scale plot structure typical of Wilhelminian-era development. Depending on the building, each one contains between six and twenty apartments.
This division prevents the project from appearing as one large building block. Instead, it creates an ensemble of several distinct buildings connected by a shared architectural concept.
The façades are structured through a combination of windows, balconies and loggias. Different materials, including metal, glass and concrete, are used for the railings. These variations give each building an individual character while creating a diverse overall appearance.
All ground-floor apartments have private front gardens. Most apartments on the upper floors feature a balcony or loggia, while the terraces on the top floors offer views across the rooftops of Dresden city centre.
FröbelHöfe is a new residential ensemble that engages with the history and existing urban structure of Friedrichstadt. A3 Architekten combine different building sizes and façade designs within a shared planning framework.
The result is eight distinctive buildings that together form a diverse and urban residential quarter.
