Today, the word kindergarten feels completely natural. We use it every day – often without thinking about where the term actually comes from.
Yet the word was not chosen by coincidence. It goes back to Friedrich Fröbel, a German educator of the 19th century who introduced a completely new way of thinking about childhood.
Fröbel believed that children are not “unfinished adults”, but independent individuals with their own natural impulses for development.
He compared children to plants – and adults to gardeners.
A garden is a protected space. It offers light, structure and care, but the plant itself must grow on its own.
Fröbel transferred this image to early education. This is how the term kindergarten – literally “children’s garden” – was created.
What began in the 19th century is now established worldwide.
The term kindergarten has been adopted into many languages and has become synonymous with early education in a safe and supportive environment.
The core idea remains timeless: children need space, security and the freedom to develop.
This philosophy is also reflected in the concept of FröbelHöfe. A quiet, protected courtyard forms the green heart of the development. Cars are intentionally moved to the underground garage, creating space above ground for encounters, movement and relaxation. The courtyard will feature small green areas, nature-inspired play elements such as wooden animals, swings and a trampoline area, as well as pathways with creative ground games. Accessible from all buildings, the courtyard creates a safe environment for children to play together and for neighbours to meet and connect.
